Are You Gaining Muscle & Losing Fat? This Body Fat Test is Simple

October 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment

The only thing that can come from only using the scale to see if your exercise program is working is “Bad News”.

If you really want to know if your fitness / fat loss program is working you need more tools. The scale does not tell you the true story to the question, am I gaining muscle and losing fat? Our body is made up of about 60% – 65% water.

A 160 lb. person has about 100 lbs. of water. That water goes in and out of cells, muscle, organs depending on many factors.

Just because you weight on the scale fluctuates does not mean that it is fat or muscle.

Below are only a few of the many reasons why your weight could be fluctating on the scale;

== Certain times of the month for women

== Consuming more sodium in your diet than normal the day before

== Overeating a different type of carb than you usually eat

== Drinking more water than normal

My point is that your bodyweight fluctates for so many reasons that we can’t figure it out.

Three ways that are better than just using the scale to see if your fitness program is working are:

#1 The way your clothes fit

If your pants are more loose around the waist and you have
more room in your clothes than more than likely are losing fat.
You are taking up less space in the room. And this is good.

#2
To use a clothe tape and a scale.

The waist line measurement and the scale give you a better feedback than just the scale

If the scale stays the same and the waist measurement goes down, then you are losing fat and gaining muscle.

If the scale stays the same and the waist measurement goes up then you are gaining fat.

#3

One site skin fold caliper kit. They are very easy to use and very affordable. Just google search for them. The feedback is much more precise than the other methods above.

Within 1 minute you can calculate 3 numbers

1. Overall bodyfat %
2. Fat weight
3. Lean Body Mass

The kits are very easy to use and within one minute you will know if you are losing, gaining, or maintaining muscle and fat.

Using any one of these techniques you will be able to find out what works and what does not work at gaining muscle and losing fat.

Monitoring my progress with a tape measure and a one site skin fold caliper kit for the last 25 years has allowed me to figure out what works for my body. Cause what works for me will be slightly different than what works for you. I can get you to good shape. But to get in great shape you have to become your own personal trainer and make small adjustments on food, resistance, cardio, goal setting, etc.

I suggest that you only change one aspect of your fitness / fat loss program and keep everything else the same for two weeks. That way you can do more of the stuff that shows progress and less of the stuff that does not.

Anyone and everyone does have the power to change!!

There are still 10 weeks left in the year to change your body, your lifestyle, your business, your relationships, etc.

Hi Darin.I’m a fifteen year old from Israel. When i was a kid i was very fat,and at about fourth grade my family flew to the states as a relocation. There,i was consistently called fat(i weighed about 65 kgs-i believe it’s about 120-135 pounds). After two years when we returned ti Israel,i started dieting and lost 25 pounds.Still, mentally i had a self-image of a fat guy. Then,at the end of seventh grade i started going to a gym.since then i have beed in the gym for these past two years.Even after that,i still didn’t achieve what i wanted those ripped abbs, even though everyone i know told me i had a great looking body.(i do love my biceps to be honest)Now i’ve been so annoyed by that lately, and even though i go to a dietician and i play at israel’s national ice hockey team,i still don’t have abbs. Also i’ve started to fear that working out stopped my growth. Can you tell me if it’s a lie that lifting weights stops your growth?because i’ve become so frustrated and i can’t decide if i should or shouln’t work out even more intensely to get those abbs or just wait till i’m 18 when my body is fully grown? I’m really looking to an answer on this one,Idan.
