10 Year Old Client Accomplish's Feat Heard Around The World

Something happened this last week that blows my mind. One of my client’s 10 year old daughters (Becca Mann) just accomplished something that has never been done before. She officially swam the Maui Channel in Hawaii to become the youngest person ever to successfully finish. She swam for over 6 ½ hours with out touching land or the boat that her mom was in right beside her. If she would have; she would have been disqualified.

All I can say is Holy _hit! What have I done lately; is my first question?

The Maui Channel is a ten miles stretch of Ocean between two Hawaiian Islands. There are many physical obstacles to finishing the Maui Channel; tiger sharks; Portuguese Man War, jellyfish, & many days there are stiff currents. Most years only 6 or 7 adults make it; while many fail. Never has anyone so young successfully finished the challenge.

What Becca Mann accomplished over the week-end boggles my mind. How can such a little body have such a big heart with big aspirations? How does she set goals so high and achieve them? Where does her confidence come from? How does she fight through that little voice of doubt that surely rises at some point when we go for a goal or ambition?

She was stung several times by jellyfish the day before the event as she practiced in the ocean the day before. She swam through several jellyfish in the initial stages of the swim. She could see the bottom for awhile and see turtles but then it turns dark and in the middle of the channel it is black and 1100 feet deep. There was at one time a big barge behind her; that was breaking her concentration. The list could go on and on of different things that would have prevented most of us from finishing this challenge.

She drank only a half a Gatorade, an Atkins protein shake, a package of sport beans and ½ of a Hershey bar while water; without touching the boat. When she got back to the hotel, she ordered the whole menu from room service.

She was determined to break 5 hours but guess what? The currents were not available to her and she was swimming in place against the current in the latter parts of the swim. How do you swim another 1 hour and a half after you have set yourself up for finishing in 5 hours?
If you ask me, the physical challenges (as ominous as they are) were the easy part compared to the mental and emotional challenges.

But what Becca Mann accomplished over the week-end boggles my mind. How can she set goals so high and achieve them? Where does her confidence come from? How does she fight through the little nagging voice of self doubt?

You see at 43 years old I have had my share of attempts and failures. I take pride of my ability to inspire & motivate others as a professional Personal Trainer. It seems the further most of us get in life, the easier it is to listen to the little nagging voice of self doubt and stop trying. I think that we get beaten down by experience and the inner voice of self doubt slowly becomes stronger. But Becca has re-energized me. Her accomplishment is inspiring. I believe that we can learn a lot from Becca’s example.

You see, I believe it is important to start thinking like a child again; to dream, and to believe that we can do anything. I am a firm believer that we create our own universe with our own thoughts. You know the “Thoughts Become Things” mentality. Whatever we BEIEVE, we can achieve. Unfortunately many of us have been beaten up by life and have not had good coaching on how to stay on track. For most of us our beliefs have become limiting.

Limiting beliefs are a set of generalizations we make about ourselves, others and the world around us. They are not fact, although we act as if they were. Beliefs form our version of reality based on what we feel and perceive about our experiences. They are like barriers that we will not cross, or even attempt to cross.

The fact is there are only a few universal truths. All the rest is just different individuals perceptions of their world as they see it. What they believe to be true, their limiting beliefs.
I would like to tell you about another inspiring true story.

THE FOUR MINUTE MILE;
Man has been holding athletic competitions for centuries. In fact, the first events were held in the Ancient Olympic Games in 776 B.C.

Up until the start of 1954, the sporting world absolutely new that it was physically impossible to run a mile in under four minutes. In the history of competition no one had ever come close. In fact, many medical doctors said that the human body did not have the muscular and cardiovascular endurance needed to achieve such a feet.

But on May 6, 1954, Roger Banister did what no man thought was possible. He became the first man to break the four minute barrier with a time of 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds. In the following two years, 37 other runners broke the four minute mile and shattered Roger’s mark.

The reality was that the “Four Minute Mile” was a psychological barrier; it was a “Limiting Belief” that stalled runners for centuries of reaching their true potential. Your “Limiting Beliefs” or “mental barriers” are considerably more powerful than your physical barriers.

What is your “Four Minute Mile”, what are your limiting beliefs that are holding you captive?
I can’t start my own business!
I’m not smart enough!
I do not have a college degree!
Money doesn’t grow on trees!
I don’t have enough time and energy!
I can’t lose weight and get fit!
I have a slow metabolism or bad thyroid!
I can’t balance work, family, and relationships!

Trust me when I tell you that every one of your “Limiting Beliefs” are not founded on the truth. They are “bull-shit belief stories” that you believe to be true. Pick your “Four Minute Mile” and set your own record. I know that you can achieve whatever you perceive.

Many thanks goes out to the Mann family; Bob & Beth. Kudo’s to you two for nurturing an environment so that your children can go out and conquer the world.

Now let’s go out and conquer our world!

Nice job Becca. My favorite saying is by Joseph Smith. Founder of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints.Faith is the !st great govering principle that has authority and power over all things. By faith all things remain and sustained or changed agreeable to the will of God. On alesser scale humans can achieve that which seems impossible. Also done by faith and good works.

I know how it is to swim in a current, that seems like it’s holding you back. I think that is incredible, that she swam that far! Keep going Becca Mann! I wish I had that much confidense, and determination, not to quit. I have two girls of my own, 10 years old , 6 years old. I try to keep them motvated to do what ever is in their hearts to do. I look to a Higher Power, to get my strength. I am sure that is exactly what Becca Mann does too.
    GREAT JOB Becca!!!!

Well, this article is a little old, and this phenomenal athlete has just topped this story since it was written. Becca is now 12 years old, and not only is she a nationally ranked swimmer she is the fasted 12 year old in the history of USA Swimming at two events, she now as of Sat, Oct 30th holds the national age group record in the girls 12U mile (1500m) and the girls 12U 800M

She broke the 6 year old record, and like I said, is now the fasted girl in the Nation at those events

      Hi Mark,

Wow, Thanks so much for the update. Time flies. I am so proud of the Mann girls. Their parents should be applauded as well. Keep up the great work girls.

    Hi Darin,

I found this entire article motivating, my nine year old daughter (Becca’s) team mate in a lower group in Clearwater FL…..found it inspirational as well. It was very well written and made the reader wonder what 4 minute miles they were harboring. I since read the rest of your web page, watched the videos and read your articles and found so much. I realized there was so much more I need to learn about foods and diets for athletes. I wish you were closer man.
